St. Michael Quiz Bowl Team Wins Season Opener

PETOSKEY – December 4, 2023 – St. Michael High School (SMHS), Northern Michigan’s only Classical Catholic high school, is pleased to announce that its Quiz Bowl team was victorious at the first Char-Em District tournament of the 2023-24 season.  The event was held at North Central Michigan College (NCMC) last month.

After the morning matches, St. Michael defeated the ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams from Petoskey High in the semifinals and finals, respectively, to take the “Grand Champion” crown.  The East Jordan ‘A’ team was the other semi-finalist.  Teams from Boyne City, Charlevoix, Harbor Springs, Concord, Harbor Light, and Ellsworth also participated.

SMHS Quiz Bowl coach Bret Keefe stated, ”I’m proud to see our team continue the St. Michael tradition of Quiz Bowl excellence!  Led by captain Annie Mercer, our ‘A’ team veterans span a wide and deep range of subject-specific literacy and expertise.  Our ‘B’ team, comprised largely of newer students, were solid in their collective debut and represent a bright future for our program.  Go Guardians!”

Quiz Bowl is a fast-paced “sport of the mind” in which four-player teams compete by answering questions on a wide variety of subjects including: Art, Literature, Math, Science, History, Geography, Politics, and Culture.

For several years, the SMHS team has faced schools from across the district in tournaments held at NCMC, where it has established itself as an exceptional program by routinely placing at or near the top of 16 to 18-team fields, generally against much larger schools.

St. Michael High School is High School with a Higher Purpose and a proud member of the Chesterton Schools Network, the largest and fastest-growing network of its kind in the country.  Established in 2013, the St. Michael mission is to nurture and elevate a new generation of joyful leaders educated in the Classical tradition and truth of the Catholic faith.  For information on SMHS, please visit the school website at stmichaelchesterton.org.
