PETOSKEY – January 20, 2025 – St. Michael High School (SMHS), the only Classical high school in Northern Michigan, is pleased to announce its performance of L. M. Montgomery’s classic ‘Anne of Green Gables’, later this week at the Crooked Tree Arts Center, 461 E. Mitchell St., downtown Petoskey.
Performances are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (January 22 through 24) with matinees Thursday and Saturday at 12:30pm and a Friday evening show at 7:00pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $5 per person or $20 per family.
Anne of Green Gables beautifully reflects the St. Michael commitment to forming joyful, resilient, and virtuous young men and women. Set in the Canadian wilds of Prince Edward Island, the story follows the journey of Anne Shirley, a spirited, imaginative orphan whose joy in life, perseverance through hardship, and growing moral strength transform both her own character and the community around her.
The St. Michael Drama Department shifts gears this season, following its recent string of Shakespearian comedies. SMHS Drama Director Maartje Nolan explained, “While our students regularly rise to the challenge of Shakespeare, Anne of Green Gables offers a more accessible storyline for audiences of all ages. Its warmth, humor, and heartfelt message allow both our actors and our audience to connect easily with the story while still engaging deeply with great literature.”
SMHS Headmaster Kevin Weed added, “As it’s our mission to cultivate joy, perseverance, and virtue in our St. Michael students, Anne’s story resonates deeply because it mirrors the formation we strive to provide – shaping both intellect and character. We warmly invite everyone to join us this week for wholesome, enriching theater!”
The SMHS Drama Department offers students opportunities in drama productions, both on-stage and behind the scenes. Since 2019, the troupe has dazzled audiences with Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women, Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, and more!
