Mr. Kevin Weed Appointed Headmaster of St. Michael High School

PETOSKEY – April 23, 2024 – St. Michael High School (SMHS), Northern Michigan’s only Classical Catholic high school, is pleased to announce that Mr. Kevin Weed will serve as Headmaster for the 2024-25 school year.

Mr. Weed is a career educator, with 25 years experience as a teacher and administrator. For the past four years, he has taught literature, writing, and journalism at East Jordan Public Schools. Prior to that, he was Principal of Bishop Baraga Catholic School in Iron Mountain, and spent fourteen years teaching at Hamilton Community Schools.

His experience includes the development and implementation of curricula as well as of a successful home school partnership in a public school system. He has served as union co-president and as an at-risk coordinator. He previously taught history, media, communications, and forensics and has served as a youth coach in several sports.

Prior to his education career, Mr. Weed was a sports writer and researcher, primarily covering the Olympics in various on-site capacities for the U.S. Olympic Committee, ESPN, NBC Sports, and IMAX Films. He earned Bachelors and Masters degrees in English from Northern Michigan University. He and his wife Karen have eight children and will celebrate 25 years of marriage this summer.

Current Headmaster Mr. Andrew Moe will once again teach full-time at SMHS next year, returning to a role he enjoyed for four years before stepping up to lead the school through its recent, critical transition period.

Mr. Moe stated, “Now blessed with three young children, and with the Headmaster position requiring a time commitment that’s often incompatible with my family’s needs, returning to the classroom is the right move for me. I’m extremely pleased to welcome Kevin to St. Michael and to collaborate with him for a seamless transition. His experience and zeal for Catholic education renders him a natural fit to lead our school forward.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to be Headmaster at St. Michael,” stated Mr. Weed. “Our school is a beacon of hope, not only to our students and families but also to the broader community and to the world at-large.”

“In its brief history, our school has demonstrated an unmistakable commitment to holiness and excellence that I’ve personally witnessed as a parent of St. Michael students. I believe firmly in our mission, always animated with a Christian worldview, and can testify to its success both inside and outside the classroom. I thank the Board for providing me with this opportunity and I look forward to preparation for the coming school year.”
